Doesn't such a letter condeming the AfD invitation infantilize minorities and deny the power of film to influence and change minds? I find the left continues to lose face by using "safe space" rhetoric as a means of demonizing and shaming the right, rather than actually establishing safer (non-violent) spaces.
It's an opening ceremony, not film. And the only way to battle fascism is with fascism. They met to literally deport me. That disqualifies them from not only participating in public life but also this democracy. Ban them but also do a better job of addressing economic and cultural disparities.
They met to literally discuss a plan to deport people who haven't assimilated. A laughably bad plan, concocted by unpopular ideologues (the mastermind, ironically, from Austria), which would not be voted for in this democracy.
A couple weeks ago, a federal judge ruled -- rightly so, I think -- that Die Heimat (formerly the NPD) could not recieve state funding because their party's goals were not in alignment with the values of the constitution. According to the constitution, however, they still have a right to exist.
I'm not sure what fighting fascism with fascism looks like, but if you're suggesting something along Karl Popper's view that a tolerant society not tolerate intolerance, I would agree with you -- which is why an outright ban of the AfD at this stage is actually undemocratic. They are still open to debate and are not militant. That's why the left needs to learn how demostrate the poverty of their policy plans, rather than supressing their voices, which will only function to help them grow their voter base (like the case with Trump, for example).
Only once rational argument cannot be held with those who have intolerant views should the tolerant society not tolerate the intolerant.
All the shock and awe around the meeting -- and the hundred thousand Gutmensch reacting in protest -- only serves to distract from the fact that much of the AfD, CDU, and SPD agree on Israel v. Palestine and the silencing of anti-war dissent from both Jewish and Palestinian voices.
Woops, that went long... On a side note, thanks for the great newsletter and forum for debate! When I'm better assimilated, I'll eventualy upgrade and get a mug : )
Nick Cave ❤️❤️❤️

I'm skeptical a ban would help. Something at least as nasty would grow back in its place.
