Thanks for the writeup. I read a very interesting piece this morning which clarified what I (non-German living in Germany) perceived to be a strange overreaction on the part of German authorities, in the context of the broader practice of German philosemitism. If you care to read it, it's at https://jewishcurrents.org/bad-memory-2

Thanks for having the courage to write about and share the courageous writings of others. I think your words and links were really well chosen. The closed Mosque threatened by extremists is an enormous shame. I’ve read that Syrian immigrants are horrified how conservative many German mosques are. Dennett reviewed arguments suggesting that all religious people increase tolerance for those somewhat less tolerant than themselves, leading to a slippery slope. But there must be some way to support liberal religious interpretations, given how many manage to exist.

Hi Renata, thanks for your comment. All I meant to say with that sentence is that perhaps the decision to impose a blanket ban on Palestinian demos, flags, slogans etc. is excessive and counterproductive. There are surely plenty of people who do not glorify Hamas and want to eradicate Israel who nonetheless wish to express their concern and solidarity for people in Gaza. Surely, there has to be a place for those people to express themselves freely in a democratic Germany. I think the bans have gone too far - and they might only further radicalise some people and result in more violence, also anti-Jewish violence, which is the last thing anyone wants.

The bans have gone too far for one very specific reason: the Palestinians are expressing themselves through violence and hatred. Just look when they even cheered and donated baklava in Neukolln for the murder of 1300 Israelis and no one said anything!!! This is more than enough reason to stop these disgusting rallies. Besides that I see I've been banned for commenting... this is the orwellian free speech democracy of Berlin leftists: "or you think like me or you are cancelled!"

"we need to look at cold, hard facts."

and

"Every single pro-Palestinian demonstration escalated to violent chants and even physical violence."

are incompatible statements. Hundreds of pro-Palestinian demonstrations with hundreds of thousands of attendees occurred this weekend all over the world without major incident.

It's possible to be in favor of people's unabridged right to show solidarity for each other and be horrified by criminal comments made by individuals at those protests.
